Assignment objectives and description
The student will spend the elective at the pediatric office
of the Women's and Children's Health Center. The primary emphasis
is on outpatient pediatric care. The student will see patients
under the supervision of the pediatric faculty and will be
responsible for preparing a one hour case presentation on
an outpatient topic. Student attendance at pediatric grand
rounds on Friday mornings is required.
Objectives
- Learn the basics of well child care: a)
growth and development, b) immunizations schedule, risks
and benefits, c)infant and child nutrition guidelines, d)
anticipatory guidance issues for each age group.
- Become familiar with common outpatient
pediatric illnesses, evaluation treatment and follow-up.
- Become familiar with outpatient management
and evaluation of common behavioral issues.

Neonatology

- Become familiar with assessment of gestational
age and condition at birth.
- Know how to resuscitate an infant.
- Become familiar with diagnosis and differential
diagnosis of common problems of newborns.

- Become familiar with principles of ventilator
use.
- Understand the multi-disciplinary approach
to infant care.
- Follow three to five patients in NICU and
attend high-risk deliveries or c-sections.

Pediatric Pulmonology

Assignment objectives and description
Under the supervision of the pediatric pulmonologist, the student will follow in-patients, perform consults and see out-patients and emergencies as they arrive. The student will be expected to assist in all minor surgical procedures such as bronchoscopies, thoracentesis, chest tubes, etc. The student will attend pediatric grand rounds every Friday morning.
Objectives
- Basic competence interpreting pulmonary
function tests and chest and airway X-rays.
- Basic care of the patient with chronic
lung disease, including cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary
dysplasia, chronic respiratory failure and muscular dystrophy.
- Competence in the management of ventilators.
- Knowledge of the most common pediatric
pulmonary diseases.
- Knowledge of the medications used to treat
respiratory problems.
- In-depth knowledge of the management of
airway emergencies and stabilization of the critical-care
patient with respiratory problems.
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases.

Pediatric Neurology

Assignment objectives and description
The elective rotation will be a perceptual type of rotation. Activities consist of daily rounds (week-ends optional) and observing clinic patients.
Objectives
- Perform proper neurological exams on children.
- Recognize common pediatric neurology problems,
such as seizures, development delays, headaches and attention
deficit disorders.
- Learn the management of common neurological
problems.

Pediatric Gastroenterology

Assignment objectives and description
This clerkship will expose students to the various clinical problems encountered in pediatric gastroenterology. Students will spend time in inpatient and outpatient settings and will be responsible for the complete evaluation of patients, an accurate presentation of the case including differential diagnoses and participation in management plans and follow-up. Daily progress notes on inpatients and weekly attendance at pediatric grand rounds will be required.
Objectives
- Acquire specialized skills necessary in
the practice of pediatric gastroenterology, including history-taking,
physical examinations, detailed differential diagnosis and
management of common GI problems.
- Be exposed to nutritional support of the
pediatric patient, including enteral and parenteral nutrition
and tube feedings.
- Learn diagnostic and therapeutic skills
in gastroenterology, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy
and colonoscopy.
- Gain exposure to gastrointestinal radiology
and pathology.

Pediatric Cardiology

Assignment objectives and description
Students will participate for one month in a busy inpatient and outpatient clinical service, evaluating patients pre- and post-operatively and participating in the evaluation of "unknown" in an office setting. Responsibilities for chart notes and orders require the student's active participation in each stage of clinical decision-making in the office, the catheterization laboratory, the hospital ward and the intensive care unit.
Objectives
- Achieve an in-depth understanding of cardiac
physiology and the impact of structure on function.
- Gain a better understanding of current
tools and techniques in pediatric cardiology.
- Understand the variety of therapeutic options
for children with congenital and acquired heart disease.
