Surgery Curriculum
Third year medical students spend twelve (12) weeks on the
surgery clerkship. Each student is required to successfully
complete:
- 7 weeks of General Surgery
- 1 week of Anesthesia
- 4 weeks of Specialities
The students are assigned to two - two week rotations from
the following specialties:
- Orthopedics
- Urology
- Plastic
- Ophthalmology
- Otolaryngology
- Special Senses (1 week of ENT, 1 week
of Ophthalmology)
The students' activities during the twelve week clerkship
include daily lectures, assisting their assigned preceptor
in the operative suite, participating in the clinical management
of surgical patients in the hospital and office setting, attending
numerous skill workshops, and taking call on a rotational
basis. In addition, students complete daily rounds on their
patients, participate in weekly case presentations, and attend
their University Primary Care Clinic once a week.
Students have a unique experience of working directly with their assigned preceptor on a daily basis, because there are no surgical residents at this site. This one-on-one concept allows for the faculty preceptors to assess each student's needs and provides individual teaching and reinforcement of surgical concepts.
The department also offers two or four week surgical electives
for fourth
year medical students in:
- General Surgery
- Cardio/Thoracic Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Anesthesiology
- Emergency Medicine
- Orthopedics
- Urology
- Plastic
- Ophthalmology
- Otolaryngology
