A
Message From the Dean
Defining
community-based medicine has been at the core of our
educational philosophy at the College of Medicine at
Rockford since its inception in 1972. We have demonstrated
this at the community level as well as nationally and
internationally. We continue, for example, to require
the longest exposure in ambulatory teaching of any medical
school in the country. Our role as a World Health Organization
(WHO) Collaborating Center provides a focal point for
reform in the training of generalists and a model for
developing programs in community-based medicine. Additionally,
our Rural Medical Education program is gaining tremendous
momentum as we uniquely train future rural physicians.
We look forward to the development of our National Center
for Rural Health Professions to help make strides in
this endeavor.
We
are proud to have renowned biomedical scientists making
cutting-edge discoveries in our labs and excellent dedicated
primary care physicians precepting our students. These
efforts have been complemented by a much larger group
of community physicians representing the medical staffs
of our three affiliate hospitals, multiple medical and
surgical specialties and the community at large.
Above
all, we strive to make the College of Medicine at Rockford,
with its clinics and health centers, a nurturing environment,
in which students are provided the tools to learn and
patients are provided the treatment and compassion to
heal. The University of Illinois is truly an environment
of excellence attracting more and more stellar students
and unparalleled faculty and staff.
