Course Descriptions
CHSC 400 – Public Health Concepts and Practice
(3 semester hours)
Concepts, principles and case studies that provide an overview
of the philosophy, purpose, history, organization, functions,
tools, activities and results of public health practice are
introduced in this course.
EPID 400 – Principles of Epidemiology (3 semester
hours)
Descriptive and analytic epidemiology, determinants of health
and disease in populations and application of the epidemiologic
methods to disease control and prevention are introduced in
this course. The use of basic epidemiologic software is included.
Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent registration in BSST
400 or consent of the instructor.
BSST 400 – Biostatistics 1 (3 semester hours)
Descriptive statistics, basic probability concepts, one and
two sample statistical inference, analysis of variance and
simple linear regression are discussed. Students are introduced
to a statistical computer package such as SPSS.
HPA 400 – Principles of Management in Public
Health (3 semester hours)
This course offers a detailed discussion of the conceptual
and theoretical foundations to the principles of management
with an emphasis on public health and health care settings.
EOHS 400 – Principles of Environmental Health
(3 semester hours)
This course introduces students to environmental influences
on health; population, food, energy; community hygiene and
injury control, solid/hazardous wastes, air and water pollution,
radiation; industrial hygiene and occupational health.
CHSC 401
– Behavioral Sciences in Public Health (3 semester hours)
This course provides grounding in the behavioral sciences
with applications to public health. It examines individual,
institutional and societal responses to the psychosocial factors
influencing health and illness.
CHSC 432 – Analytic Methods in Public Health
(3 semester hours)
This class provides analytic and computer skills needed for
assessment and planning in public health and for maximizing
the acquisition and use of public health data. Prerequisites:
BSST 400 or EPID 400, and CHSC 400 or consent of the instructor.
CHSC 480 – Health Education and Health Promotion
(3 semester hours)
Theories of health, illness behavior and health education
for public health professionals are presented. The course
examines classical health interventions and surveys as well
as approaches for individual and group behavior change.
Prerequisites: CHSC 400 and HPA 401 or consent of the
instructor.
CHSC 494 – Media and Community Health (3 semester
hours)
This course combines communications theory, skills, and assessment
with principles of community-oriented health and community
intervention. Public health strategies studied include
using the media in public health, developing a public health
marketing campaign, community-oriented primary care, and community
prevention.
HPA 494
– U.S. Health and Public Health Systems (3 semester
hours)
A study of the organization, roles, and responsibilities of
the U.S. health system and public health system on the federal,
state, and local levels of government. This course examines
a variety of topics including utilization, planning, human
resources, managed care, outcome assessment, utilization review
and state and local public health programs.
HPA 494 – Public Health
Ethics and Law (3 semester hours)
This course discusses ethical theory and concepts in order
to identify and analyze public health problems with an ethical
component. Explores public health ethical issues as they arise
in a variety of settings, particularly emphasizing those,
which involve the legal system.
IPHS 650 – Field Experience in Public Health
(3 semester hours)
Preceptor-guided field experience in public health practice
through as association or public health-oriented community
program for students in the MPH. Prerequisites: All course
requirements should be completed for the MPH.
IPHS 698 – MPH Capstone Experience (1 semester
hour)
Individual project in public health directed toward the MPH
capstone experience, which is required for the degree. Prerequisites:
All course requirements should be completed for the MPH.
